The BLACKBIRD "toile half coat" is a garment fashioned directly from a "toile"—an unfinished piece typically created for fitting purposes—into a finished product.

In this version, we have incorporated even more raw-edge details than before, emphasizing a minimalist, unfinished aesthetic. Conversely, areas that support the garment’s structure—such as sleeve setting, interior piping, and the roll of the collar—are crafted with meticulous care.

A rugged expression paired with precise tailoring. The coexistence of these conflicting elements is a major feature of this coat.

The fabric used is an original wool material produced by BLACKBIRD.
The Charcoal colorway is finished with a complex, deep hue, reminiscent of black wool fabric that has been naturally sun-bleached and faded after years of sitting by a window.

The charm lies in the bulky form that utilizes the generous fabric volume and the unique, coarse texture characteristic of Shetland wool.
While it has a voluminous feel that wraps around the body, it retains the ease of movement and practicality expected of a half coat.

We believe this is an incredibly versatile item that goes with everything, and it’s a convenient piece that can anchor any outfit when you’re in a pinch. The toile series, which is now becoming synonymous with BLACKBIRD, was first created about eight years ago.

I feel that once people start to own a certain amount of clothing, they tend to avoid items referred to as "staples."
Whether it’s our clothes or others, I believe that those who truly love clothing are the ones who should be looking at the staples created by brands.
To me, a good staple piece from a brand isn't just an entry-level item; it is where the brand’s approach to craftsmanship is most clearly expressed in the details.

How the fabric moves when sewn together.
Whether the sewing machine speed is appropriate. Where it shrinks and where distortions appear after washing.
What it looks like after years of wear.
Even if it looks like we are making the same things, our team reviews these small details every time.
It feels a bit cringe-worthy to put this kind of thing into words, and it might be an exaggeration to say we pour our souls into every single piece, but I do hope that sentiment reaches you.
