BLACKBIRD “toile half coat” (Check)

The "toile half coat" by BLACKBIRD is a finished garment based on a "toile"—a prototype typically used for fitting purposes—designed to be worn as is.

This iteration features more raw-edge detailing than previous versions, emphasizing a simple, unfinished aesthetic. Conversely, the structural elements of the garment, such as the sleeve attachment, interior piping, and collar roll, are meticulously crafted.

A rough, rugged appearance paired with precise tailoring; the coexistence of these contrasting elements is the defining characteristic of this coat.

The fabric used is an original wool textile produced by BLACKBIRD. It features a deep, complex checkered pattern, created by intersecting lines of red, yellow, and green over a charcoal base. The way multiple colors overlap within the muted ground color allows the impression of the check to change depending on the viewing distance and the items it is paired with.

The stiff texture characteristic of Shetland wool and the bulky silhouette that utilizes a generous amount of fabric are also key attractions. Despite the voluminous feel that wraps around the body, it retains the ease of movement you expect from a half-coat.

In our shop, we find this to be an incredibly versatile item—the kind of piece that pulls any outfit together when you aren't sure what to wear. Since it is designed to be worn open, we hope you enjoy the process of choosing inner layers and experimenting with various styles and genres.

The "toile" series, which is becoming synonymous with BLACKBIRD, first started about eight years ago.

I have a feeling that when people reach a certain point in owning clothes, they tend to avoid items labeled as "staples." However, I believe that true fashion enthusiasts—not just of our brand, but of any brand—should pay attention to the staple items created by a house. A good staple piece from a brand I respect is not merely an entry-level item; it is where the brand's approach to craftsmanship is most clearly articulated in the finer details.

How does the fabric move when sewn?
Is the sewing machine speed appropriate? Where does it shrink after washing, and where does distortion occur?
What does it look like after years of wear?
Even if it looks like we are just making the same thing over and over, our team revisits these small details every time.
It feels a bit pretentious to put this into words, and saying we pour our souls into every single garment might sound exaggerated, but I truly hope that sentiment reaches you.
